The ratio of water to cement is the most important factor in determining the strength and durability of concrete once it has been cured properly. For instance, if the Ratio W/C is 0.40 it means that for every 100 lbs of cement that are used to make the concrete an additional 40lbs water is added.

What Happens? If You Add Too Much Water


Adding excessive amounts of liquid to concrete may cause cracking, shrinkage, and weakening of the overall strength. A lot of water makes concrete that is loose and challenging to work with and leads to bleeding issues and segregation in concrete.

What Happens? If You Add Less Water

In the end, without enough water, the concrete will become concrete hard, difficult to fill, and compact, and may cause honeycombing to occur in concrete. It increases the effort in moving concrete.

How do I calculate the correct amount of water required to make concrete?

The right water-cement ratio will ensure that concrete will gain more durability, porosity, and color are even.

The recommended ratio of water cement for concrete

  • For concrete constructions that are not typical (sidewalks or driveways): 0.6 to 0.7
  • If a higher-quality concrete is preferred: 0.4

The ideal ratio for water-cement ranges from 0.40 to more than 0.60.

  • An amount of 0.3 makes concrete too rigid (unless superplasticizers are employed).
  • An amount of 0.8 makes concrete quite wet and fragile concrete.

Normal compressive strengths for concrete that are present when it is properly curing are:

  • 0.4 w/c ratio -> 5600 psi
  • 0.8 w/c ratio -> 2000 psi.

Its method of water cement ratio calculation can be described as the ratio of cement to water. Simply put, water quantity is divided by the quantity of cement, and the result of a calculation is the water/cement ratio.

For instance, if the ratio of water-cement equals 0.50 for concrete, the amount of cement that is added to it, it will be around 50 kilograms (weight of one bag of cement)

The water required to make concrete will be

Water/Cement = 0.50

50 kg of water equals 0.50

Water = 0.50 50

Water = 25 liters = 6.60 gallon

The same applies to W/C = 0.40

Water = 0.40 50

Water = 20 liters = 5.28 gallon

You can see that water is reduced when we reduce the ratio between cement and water. It is a known fact that concrete with less water enhances its strength. However, there is a limit to the ratio of water-cement. The ratio of water to cement should be 0.30 to 0.35, above which concrete is too rigid and unsuitable for handling.
